A useful first step

When in doubt,
stop the door

An opener is powerful. Springs and cables carry significant tension. Avoid testing a door that looks unstable.

Keep clear of a crooked or partially supported door

Stop using the opener and keep people, pets, and vehicles clear. Do not stand beneath the door, pull loose cables, force rollers into tracks, or attempt to support the door with improvised objects.

Leave loaded hardware alone

Springs, cables, drums, and bottom brackets can release stored energy. Do not loosen these parts or attempt a spring replacement yourself.

Be careful with the emergency release

Releasing an open door with a suspected spring or cable problem can allow it to fall. Do not disconnect the opener in that condition. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions and have an unstable door assessed.

Observe without touching

From a safe distance, note the door position, unusual sounds, and whether both sides appear level. Share those observations when arranging help. Do not repeat opener cycles to demonstrate a fault.

These are general precautions, not a diagnosis. Follow the instructions for your particular door and opener.
